Audiences are in for a royally good time as London High School’s drama department puts on the comedic musical, “Once Upon a Mattress.”

Performances are set for 7 p.m. March 15-17 in the high school’s Joyce Hildebrand Auditorium. Admission is $7.

Recently, director Tim Tanner took time between rehearsals and teaching obligations to answer a few questions about the production.

Why did you choose this show?

Tanner: I was looking for a fun show that might not be immediately recognized by the public. That way the audience comes in not knowing what to expect. I also try to accommodate as many talented actors and singers as I can.

What is the show about?

Tanner: If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea,” you may be in for a walloping surprise. Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?

Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

What students are performing lead roles in the production?

Tanner: Ellie Shoemaker, senior, Queen Aggravian; Seth Gillilan, junior, Prince Dauntless; Ruth Peart, senior, Princess Winnifred; Luke Peart, freshman, Prince Harry; Sarah George, senior, Lady Larken; and Clay Hurley, junior, King Sextimus.

How many are in the cast overall?

Tanner: There are 33 cast members, 10 crew members, 12 orchestra members, a piano accompanist, a choreographer, a director, and about a dozen parents helping behind the scenes.

What are some of the challenges in the material and how is the cast getting along with them?

Tanner: We have added Ms. Janelle Wilson to our staff as choreography and assistant director. The students have had a great time working with her and adding movement to our shows.

Any fun props or staging?

Tanner: I don’t want to give away any surprises, but keep your eyes open at the ending.

Why should people come to see the show?

Tanner: I think everyone likes to escape and have some fun now and then. “Once Upon A Mattress” is a show that the whole family can enjoy.
