The Ohio Hispanic Coalition (OHC) is in the middle of a winter clothing drive for the Hispanic/Latino community in central Ohio.

Health Program Coordinator Jesus Orvalle said they have experienced a very good response to this call to the community, although he could not say exactly how much clothing has been collected thus far.

He did say he is very pleased with the community response.

"We’ve had several people dropping things off at the office, so it’s getting there," said Orvalle.

Originally the deadline was Nov. 28, but OHC has decided to extend that deadline in the hopes of helping more families have the proper clothing to brave the elements this winter.

"I think it’s important because for some (people), this is the first winter in central Ohio and they have no idea how cold it gets here. They get here in the spring and summer and it’s a shock to them," said Orvalle.

According to Orvalle, OHC is asking for a variety of winter clothing items for all sizes and ages, such as hats, gloves, sweaters, coats and scarves.

Items can be donated at either the 6161 Busch Blvd. location, or on the Westside at 3556 Sullivant Ave. Both locations are accepting donations between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

OHC also offers a pick-up service between 9 a.m and 5 p.m. Those who are interested in donating, should contact Orvalle for more information at 840-9934.

"Some are not fortunate enough to actually be able to buy a heavy winter coat; that is hard to reach at this point. I know we can’t help everyone but if we can help a few, that’s fine," said Orvalle.
