New beginnings

January. That refreshing time when we can move forward into the New Year with a renewed effort to do things just a bit differently than last year and look forward to new beginnings.

We can forget about all the things we should have, could have, would have done, but didn’t, and make resolutions to do things differently – like exercise more, eat less, quit smoking, organize our tax info before April 15, etc.

For Go Groveport, 2007 was a year of new beginnings. As we look forward to 2008, we want to share with you a brief history of where we started, what was accomplished, and what lies ahead for Go Groveport!

History

Go Groveport began in the fall of 2006 as the brainchild of three local community members who also operate businesses in Groveport.

The mission was then, and still is today, to communicate "to the community, for the community" all of the benefits of living, working and playing in the Groveport area.  Go Groveport is membership-based and currently facilitates three separate functions on behalf of the Groveport community:  visitors & conventions, retail and civic.

Visitors & Conventions

In December 2006, we opened our office at 607 Main St. This space serves as a location to facilitate making member brochures and flyers available to residents and visitors of Groveport.

To accomplish the "conventions" side of things, we coordinate a community expo twice a year for our members to showcase their business or organization. Residents in and around the Groveport community can meet face-to-face to learn who and what exists in our community. This event is known as "Connect with Groveport" and is held every May and September.

Other events coordinated by Go Groveport include:

•Groveport Bridal & Formal Affair, first Saturday in March

•Groveport Farmers’ Market, every Thursday, June-August

•Hometown Gift Market, Friday after Thanksgiving

Retail

In March 2007, retail operations began at 607 Main St. as the Bierberg Mercantile.

The mercantile is composed of local merchants who buy space to display and sell their wares to the community. The mercantile also contains a seating area for folks to meet and greet. Coffee, tea and homemade cookies are available by donation to all visitors. Currently there are 33 merchants inside the retail space including Cellution Group, an authorized Verizon Wireless dealer, and Great Harvest Bread Co. from Pickerington.

Special events are also coordinated within this space. (See below for more information on upcoming events.)

Civic

In January 2007, Go Groveport began distributing neighborhood bags to new Groveport Madison residents in homes, apartments and senior living locations.

Since the inception of this program, 900 bags have been delivered throughout five zip code areas encompassing the Groveport Madison school district. The bags contain "Welcome to Groveport" information from Go Groveport members regarding their business, organization and events.

In December 2007, Go Groveport facilitated the Groveport Madison Adopt-A-Family program. Together with the community, Christmas was fulfilled for 350 children from 107 families in the Groveport Madison School District who needed a little extra help at Christmas.

Plans are in development now for further opportunities to fulfill additional civic necessary events and activities. Stay tuned.
