The Mount Sterling Chamber of Commerce and Mount Sterling Community Center are hosting an array of Christmas events Dec. 1-3.
The Chamber has slated a tree lighting at 6 p.m. Dec. 1 at the gazebo across from town hall on London Street. Santa will be on hand. Also, anyone in need is welcome to select mittens, hats and blankets from the Giving Tree.
Crafters and business open houses are planned for Dec. 1 starting at 6 p.m. and Dec. 2 from noon to 6 p.m. The United Methodist Church and Eastern Star will serve free hot chocolate, cookies and coneys both days. Food trucks will set up shop downtown, as well.
Also planned for Dec. 2 are the Mount Sterling Eagles Youth League Breakfast with Santa, 8 a.m. to noon at the community center, and an illuminated parade at 5:30 p.m.
All weekend, fresh-cut Christmas trees will be for sale next to town hall.
The Community Center’s gingerbread house contest is open to business and individual entries. The individual category includes adult and youth classes. The public is invited to vote on their favorites. Prizes go to the winners. Entries must be delivered to the center, 164 E. Main St., by 5 p.m. Dec. 1. The houses will be on display from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 2 and from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 3.
The Community Center’s “Christmas in the Village” celebration is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 3. Festivities include a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, a Mount Sterling Public Library craft, horse-drawn wagon rides, music by the First United Methodist Church hand bell choir, refreshments, and a Christmas Past display by the Mount Sterling Community Museum.
Visitors also are invited to make Christmas greetings for veterans. Each child will receive a gift. Visitors can vote on their favorite gingerbread houses, as well as bid on a Christmas quilt stitched by the center’s Sew Social Ladies. The quilt silent auction runs through Dec. 22.
The center’s Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest is set for 2:30 p.m. Find or make an ugly or funny t-shirt, sweatshirt, sweater or vest and wear it for the contest. Judges will pick prize winners.
