The London Rotary Club is pleased to honor senior Maya Berkey as London High School’s December Student of the Month.
Students of the month are selected by school administrators based on their academic and extracurricular achievement and positive character.
Maya has a 3.87 grade point average, is ranked 18th in her class, and says her favorite class is biomedical science. She has played junior varsity and varsity volleyball for three years. She served as captain the past two years and received the Sportsmanship Award in the 2021 season.
Maya is a member of National Honor Society and is a student ambassador at Tolles Career and Technical Center. She has shown rabbits, chickens and cows through her 4-H club and is a member of the 4H Junior Fair Board. She loves animals so much she has also served as a volunteer at the Humane Society of Madison County.
When asked to name a school staff person who has inspired her, she named she Honors English teacher Katie Parnell.
“Mrs. Parnell is always very welcoming and willing to help anyone out,” Maya said.
About Maya, Parnell said, “Maya was an excellent student in my Honors English 10 class in 2019-2020. She was very thorough in completing all of her work, investing her time and interest in class content, and pushing others to try their best. She has a passion for science and has a very bright future!”
After graduation, Maya plans to attend college to earn a zoology degree. She is the daughter of Lisa and Telford Berkey of London.
