Three years ago, Duane McVay, a life group leader at the Columbia Heights United Methodist Church in Galloway, established a Star Wars event as a community outreach project that benefits both children and adults alike. It was, in his words, a great success. “I was impressed by the turnout at each event we held, as well as the dedication of the children and adults who came wearing the outfits of their favorite characters.” When it came time to organize this year’s ‘May the Fourth be with You’ event, however, there was some doubt as to whether it would be safe to hold. Despite the great disturbance in the force, McVay and several other members of the church’s congregation decided to move forward with their plans and invited the community to drive-thru and pick up build-your-own lightsaber packets and Popfold paper figures on May 3. Those who came even got to see the great Obi-Wan Kenobi (McVay) and Queen Padme Amidala (Diane Davis) on her throne.
