Putting on a fireworks show isn’t cheap.
“The cost is $10,500. This year’s show will be as good or better than last year’s show,” said Bob Harper, head of the West Jefferson July Fourth Streetfest Committee.
The non-profit, volunteer group relies on donations to cover the cost of the annual fireworks display. To help offset expenses, the group is holding an auction.
The event is set for May 16 at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7005, 1 Veterans Way, West Jefferson. The festivities start at 2 p.m.
“This is an important opportunity to contribute towards the fireworks,” Harper said, adding that last year’s auction raised $3,500.
The committee is accepting donations of new or gently used items (excluding heavy appliances) for the auction. To arrange a pick-up, call Harper at (614) 879-8840. Or items can be dropped off at the VFW Post between 12 and 9 p.m. May 15 or 9 a.m. and noon May 16.
“We already have several gift certificates from local merchants worth $25 and up. We also have crafts and other household items,” Harper said.
In addition to the live auction, the benefit will feature food, as well as live music by local musicians.
For those who don’t have auction items to give or can’t make it to the benefit to bid, monetary donations can be mailed to “West Jefferson July Fourth Streetfest Inc.,” 880 Crescent Drive, West Jefferson OH 43162.
Additionally, on May 20, the Applebee’s restaurant off of Hilliard-Rome Road will donate 10 percent all sales to the fireworks fund. Diners must present a flyer at the time of purchase. Flyers will be available in advance at the May 16 auction, as well as at several locations around West Jefferson, including Mike’s Pizza, Sue’s Barbershop and West Jefferson Hardware.
This year’s West Jefferson July Fourth Streetfest will take place July 2-4.
