Many ways to support people of all abilities

On March 5, the Madison County commissioners signed a proclamation to designate March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. They were joined by a pair of individuals served by the Madison County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD): (front row, left) County Commissioner Chris Wallace, Whitney Shoaf, Cameron Creamer; (back row) Madison County Administrator Rob Slane, MCBDD Superintendent Susan Thompson, County Commissioner Dr. Tony Xenikis, MATCO Consumer Services Coordinator Priscilla McKenzie, and County Commissioner Mark Forrest.

Supporting everyone.

As they do each March, the Madison County commissioners signed a proclamation on March 5 declaring this month as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This year’s theme is “All Abilities. All Voices. All of Us!”

The proclamation, in part, says:

• Encourage everyone to focus on the abilities of all people.
• Active participation in community activities.
• Openness to learn and acknowledge each person’s contribution.
• Opportunities to function as independently and productively as possible must be fostered in our community.
• Support opportunities within the community that includes full access to education, housing, employment, and recreational activities.

The proclamation encourages to “take time to get to know someone with a disability and recognize ‘all’ means all: All Abilities. All Voices. All of Us!”

The following upcoming events, hosted by the Madison County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD), are opportunities for the community to support the individuals the board serves:
