The 6th Annual Big Splash 5K run is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 22, starting at the South Charleston pool. All proceeds from the fundraiser go toward the pool’s operational costs.
“It’s hard to believe this is our sixth year doing this,” said Wendy Russell, president of the South Charleston Pool board, the non-profit volunteer group that manages and runs the pool.
This year’s 5K features a new course. Pre-registration is $20, comes with a t-shirt and is due by Aug. 7. Registration for youths in grades K-12 is $15. Race day registration is $25. Forms can be downloaded at www.villageofsouthcharleston.net.
Prizes will go to the top male and female finishers overall, as well as the top three finishers in each age group: 18 and younger, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60 and older. After the race, runners are invited to take a dip in the pool to cool off.
Last year’s Big Splash 5K had about 70 entrants and raised approximately $1,500. Russell said she is hoping to top that this year.
Anyone who would like to support the pool but cannot participate in the 5K is welcome to send a tax-deductible donation to: “CRC Pool,” P.O. Box 90, South Charleston, OH 45368.
Additionally, the pool board is always open to new members and volunteers.
“We’d love to have people share their brain power and ideas,” Russell said.
In addition to Russell, board members include: Matt Harbage, vice president; Jen Routzahn, treasurer; Rose White, secretary; Josh Rice, board member; and Dawn Cooper, board member. The pool is planning a Fun Day for 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 15 during which children can enjoy special games during pool breaks.
