It was a perfect, sunny fall day for the kickoff of London Parks and Recreation’s new Youth Grass Volleyball League. The inaugural games took place on Sept. 20 on the lawn outside City Hall at 20 S. Walnut St.

“I think it is important, this year in particular, for the kids to get out and be around other kids to have fun and a sense of normalcy,” said Ashley Winebrenner, one of the league’s coaches. “I commend London Parks and Rec Director Tammy Braskett for coming up with this league. People wanted and needed it.”

Winebrenner has coached traditional indoor volleyball through the Parks and Rec Department for 17 years, and her daughters, Bentley, 6, and Hailey, 8, participated in the outdoor grass volleyball games.

London City Schools High School Athletic Director Jim Wolverton and his family attended, and two of his daughters, Kyndal, 7, and Brynlee, 9, played in the games.

“It’s important for these kids to have a chance to play the sports they love and have socialization,” Wolverton said. “It’s a great thing to see London Parks and Rec do this because the volleyball games are usually inside. Director Tammy Braskett was able to adapt to the challenges this year brought and allowed the kids to play outdoors.”
