A local pool is enhancing patrons’ experiences this summer by adding upgrades and increasing programing.

The London Municipal Pool will kick off the 2014 season at 12:30 p.m. May 31.

“For the first day of the season, we will have $1 admission,” said Linda Granger, pool manager. “So, this would be a great opportunity to check the pool out and see if you want to be a member.”

In addition to a full concession area and multiple pools, the facility has a new shade area for relief from the sun, thanks to an $8,000 grant from the American Academy of Dermatology.

“We beat out cities that have warm weather year round, like California and Texas, so winning this is a big deal,” said Granger, who partnered with local dermatologist Angela Yang Shen of Buckeye Dermatology in applying for the grant.

“Before, all we had was a sail shade that could not withstand the weather,” Granger said. “This will provide much needed shade for patrons, especially young children and seniors.”

The hot sun is hardest on babies and senior citizens, so coming to a pool without shade was a problem for some.

“Lots of kids come here seven days a week, so being in the sun all day is not good and can cause a heat stroke,” Granger said. “It is important to sit in the shade for a while, not to mention eating in the hot sun is not pleasant.”

In another improvement, Madison County Hospital is paying for installation of a handicap lift station to help people who are unable to get themselves in and out of the pool.

“They are also putting in pool steps to help people out of the pool who cannot use the ladder,” Granger said.

The city allows the hospital to use the pool for free for physical occupation therapy for patients. The lift station and ladder are the hospital’s way of saying thanks.

Other changes at the pool include a variety of new classes, including a Scarlet and Gray Swim Clinic by Bill Wadley, Ohio State University head swim coach, and a senior swim in the mornings before the pool opens.

“This facility is in the best shape it has ever been in, and we are going to have more entertainment programs for the whole family,” Granger said. “So come down, meet our wonderful staff and relax with the family.”

The London Municipal Pool is located at 205 Park Ave. For details, call the city administration office at (740) 852-3243.
