The London Police Department has established an “exchange safe zone” in front of the police building at 10 E. First St.
The two parking spots directly in front of the building are now reserved for anyone who needs a public space to buy, sell or trade goods with an unknown party. This eliminates the need for someone to invite a stranger to their home or workplace to complete a transaction initiated through an online sales site. The space also can be used for custody exchanges.
The area is under video surveillance and available for use around the clock. There is no need to notify the police department ahead of time.
“It’s just a safer place for people to meet,” said Police Chief Glenn A. Nicol. “People are less likely to scam you if they know they are in a public zone and it is being recorded.”
Nicol said police departments across the country are establishing exchange safe zones.
“It’s a trend that makes sense,” he said. “It’s another service to offer to the public. We’re always looking for different ways to enhance public safety and quality of life.”
The police department spent $325 to establish the zone, purchasing signage and an additional security camera.
