On May 6, special education athletes representing the Central Buckeye Conference’s 12 schools gathered at London High School to compete in the CBC Cup. This is the second year for the competition. It began in 2019 but was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the CBC Cup, special education athletes partner with other students who serve as their “buddies” or “coaches” throughout the day. With their peers assisting them, each of the athletes competes in up to three events: 100-meter dash, hotshot, homerun derby, Frisbee toss, soccer goal kick, bean bag toss, or football target toss.
Due to rain, this year’s event took place in the gym at the high school. (In 2019, it took place on Bowlus Field at the London City Schools athletic complex.) During opening ceremonies, the athletes were introduced with Olympics-like fanfare. After competing in the morning and breaking for lunch together, they gathered for awards and closing ceremonies.
The 12 member schools of the CBC are Bellefontaine, Benjamin Logan, Graham, Indian Lake, Jonathan Alder, Kenton Ridge, London, North Union, Northwestern, Shawnee, Tecumseh and Urbana.
