London and West Jeff candidates file for May election

The filing deadline for the May election was Feb. 4. Candidates filed for government seats in the city of London and the village of West Jefferson.

The Madison County Board of Elections will certify the candidates on Feb. 17. If all who filed petitions are certified, there will be a Republican primary election in London and a non-partisan special election in West Jefferson on May 5.

The voter registration deadline for the May election is April 16. For more information, visit electionsonthe.net/oh/madison/ or call the Board of Elections at (740) 852-9424.

London candidates

All but two of the individuals who filed for races in London are Republicans. If certified, the others, one a Democrat and the other an Independent, won’t appear on the ballot until the November general election. Independents have until May 4 to file with the Board of Elections.

In the following list, Republican candidates are marked with an (R), Democrats with a (D), and Independents with an (I).

  • Mayor—Pat Closser (R) and Henry Comer (R)
  • City auditor—Kathleen Hensel (R)
  • City law director—Zahid Siddiqi (R)
  • Council president—Jennifer Hitt (I) and John Stahl (R)
  • Council at-large (three seats open)—Megan Douglas (R), Roger Morris (R), Joshua Peters (R), Jason Schwaderer (R)
  • Council Ward 1—Trint Hatt (R)
  • Council Ward 2—Richard Minner (R)
  • Council Ward 3—Lora Long (R)
  • Council Ward 4—Rex Castle (R) and Butch Scott (D)

West Jefferson candidates

The mayor’s seat is the only race in West Jefferson. The top two vote-getters in May will move on to the November election. The race is non-partisan.

  • Mayor—Steven Johnston, Ray Martin, Brian Williams.

Issues

Miami Trace Local School District is the only entity that filed an issue for the May 4 election. The school district’s territory includes only a very small portion of Madison County, accounting for about 29 voters.
