In the late 1980s and early 1990s, author Robert Fulghum shared his philosophy on life through several best-selling books, including “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.”
A play by the same name brings those life lessons to the stage. Through a series of vignettes, actors take on different roles as people figuring out how to live life from the time they are children to the time they die. The funny and the serious are delivered through monologues, small group scenes, and full ensemble scenes.
“It’s challenging. Instead of becoming one character throughout the play, a lot of our cast members are playing four, five and six characters because of the different scenes they’re in,” said Scott Spohler, director of Madison-Plains High School’s production of “All I Really Needed to Know,” set for Nov. 20-22.
Spohler said he chose the play because it fits well with the students who auditioned this year and because it gives nearly every cast member a chance to shine.
“Almost everybody has at least one scene where they’re the star,” he said.
The cast list includes: junior John Bollinger, freshman Sara Hoop, senior Haley Kitchen who also serves as stage manager, senior James Lawless, junior Amber Massie, junior Destiny Morgan, senior Tessa Rohrs and sophomore Kat Wilbert.
Senior Joe Ballah, sophomore Jenna Lawless and sophomore Aubrey Lilly man sound and lights. Sophomore Elizabeth MacDowell and senior Nikkie Patel make up the makeup crew.
For the first time in two years, the play will be performed not only after school for the public but also during school for students. The student show is set for the last two class periods on Nov. 20. The public shows are at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 and 2 p.m. Nov. 22. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students.
