Line up! It’s time to dance!
Mount Sterling American Legion Post 417 is hosting a seven-week series of country line dance lessons leading up to a dance on Sept. 27.
The lessons start Aug. 13 and continue every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. through Sept. 24. The cost is $5 per person per lesson. Katie Raleigh of Grove City is the instructor. Pre-registration is not required.
The lessons are a great way to prepare for the dance on Sept. 27, which will feature live music by Southern Illusion from 9 p.m. to midnight. The doors will open at 7.
“We’ve had suggestions of holding a singles dance or round and square dancing, but according to some people who came to the Legion to play bingo, the biggest thing going is line dancing,” said Billy Martin, Post 417 finance officer.
Proceeds from the dance will go into the Legion’s building fund. The first priority is replacement of the leaky drop ceiling, which Martin estimates to be 35 years old.
“There’s not much in the building fund right now. What we do have goes to repairs, like the air conditioning,” he said.
The Legion has 75 members and meets on the first Monday of each month. At least two more fundraising dances are in the works, one on Halloween and another on New Year’s Eve.
Regular fundraisers include a monthly fish fry and bingo at 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Martin, who chairs the bingo committee, said August is “Beat the Heat” month on bingo nights. On Aug. 5 and Aug. 19, participants can play for $10 for the night. On Aug. 12 and Aug. 26, players get “all the paper you can play” for $15.
For more information about the dance lessons, call the Legion Post at 740-869-2795. The lessons are open to anyone 18 or older. Those who attend the dance on Sept. 27 must be at least 21 years old because alcohol will be served. The post is located at 27 Clark St.
