On Dec. 14, law enforcement personnel and firefighters will go Christmas shopping with 25 local children. A pizza party will follow at the West Jefferson Community Center.
The shopping trip will take place at the Target on Hilliard-Rome Road on the west side of Columbus. Officers and firefighters from the West Jefferson Police Department, West Jefferson post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Jefferson Township Fire Department are participating.
Formerly known as “Shop with a Cop,” “Heroes and Helpers” is meant to brighten the holidays for children and their families and give them a positive experience with law enforcement and first responders.
“This is to show them we’re all good guys,” said West Jefferson Police Chief Christopher Floyd.
Target and the Madison County Shriners donated money to help make the event possible. Additionally, West Jefferson Mayor Ray Martin and members of the West Jefferson Police Department each contributed $50 in exchange for the privilege of growing beards during “no-shave November.”
The public is welcome to donate to the “Heroes and Helpers” effort, too. Monetary donations can be dropped off at the West Jefferson Police Department, 28 E. Main St. For more information, call (614) 879-7672.
