With the start of the new school year approaching, officials with the South-Western City Schools District welcomed incoming kindergarteners to Harmon Elementary for the third annual Kindergarten Kick-Off. According to Melvina Tobert, the district’s coordinator of state and federal programs, the mission of kick-off is to help the new students familiarize themselves with the layout of the elementary schools, learn lunch line protocols, and get a glimpse of what they will be learning in the classroom with hands-on numbers and literacy activities. Here, Kora Murton, a soon-to-be student at Highland Park, reaches for an apple in the cafeteria. Afterwards, she punched in the lunch number she has to memorize.
