The London Rotary Club is pleased to honor senior Jude Salyer as London High School’s May Student of the Month.

Students of the month are selected by school administrators based on their academic and extracurricular achievement and positive character.

Jude has a 4.342 grade point average and is ranked ninth in his class. His favorite class is Algebra I. He is a four-year member of the soccer team and played tennis his junior and senior years. As a freshman and sophomore, hee played basketball and track and field. In addition to his athletic achievements, Jude has been on the merit honor roll all four years and was named a Junior Kiwanian.

When asked to name a school staff person who has inspired him, Jude named chemistry teacher Beverly Goudy.

“Mrs. Goudy is a very intelligent woman who loves doing what she does best,” he said.

Goudy stated, “Jude is one of the many outstanding seniors in CCP 1210 chemistry. He stands out from the rest of his peers for several reasons. With his great sense of humor, he makes the class lighthearted and entertaining even when there is a lot of complex material to understand.

“He is one of the students who can come to the white board and explain problems to his peers. Then it is always fun to ask him a conceptual problem when he is in front of the class. He may have to stop and think for a moment, but with a sly smile he always comes up with the correct answer. I will never forget when he finished the first test I gave him in 30 minutes. The test was made to take at least 60 minutes, so please do not blame me for thinking: ‘Oh, no. I have one of those students in this class.’ You know, the type of student that doesn’t care and flies through a test, resulting in a failing grade. Well, let me tell you, I was completely wrong. In 30 minutes, Jude received the only 100 percent in the class.

“It has been a joy and a privilege in teaching this young man. He is one person London can be very proud of.”

Jude will attend Ohio University to major in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Kimberly and Steve Cooper of London.

The London Rotary Club has a proud history dating back to 1929. It is a member of Rotary International, a volunteer organization of 1.2 million businesses and professional leaders united worldwide to provide humanitarian service and help build good will and peace.
