Jonathan Alder Junior High speller wins county bee

The 2024 Madison County Spelling Bee champion is Ansley Niley.

The Madison County Spelling Bee took place on Jan. 10, at Tolles Career & Technical Center in Plain City.

The bee featured a total of 37 competitors in grades 5-8 from the Jonathan Alder, London, Madison-Plains, and West Jefferson school districts.

All of the students competed in the written test and the oral bee. The oral bee went seven rounds and lasted 90 minutes.

Heading into Round 6, three spellers remained. Ansley Niley, an eighth-grader from Jonathan Alder Junior High, was the only speller to spell correctly in Round 6. She spelled “debilitate” then went on to correctly spell the winning word, “fraudulent.”

The runners-up, both eliminated in Round 6, were Peyton Parker, a seventh-grader from Madison-Plains Junior High, and Henry Kocher, a seventh-grader from West Jefferson Middle School.

Fifth-grade (tie, both scored 22 out of 30): Will Chinnock from Canaan Middle School (Jonathan Alder) and Delilah Jose from Norwood Elementary (West Jefferson);

Sixth-grade (tie, all scored 22 out of 30): Teagan Jorgenson from Canaan Middle School, Ethan Klay from West Jefferson Middle School, and Alexzander Hamilton from Madison-Plains Intermediate School;

Seventh-grade (scored 23 out of 30): Daniel Farmwald from Jonathan Alder Junior High; and

Eighth-grade (scored 25 out of 30): Izzie Duffy from West Jefferson Middle School.

Eighth-grade: Ansley Niley from Jonathan Alder Junior High.
