On May 7, Jonathan Alder High School hosted its first military signing ceremony to celebrate seniors who have made a future commitment to serve in the nation’s military.

Five students signed their letters of commitment: Ryan Bailey (Army ROTC), Isaac Banks (Army National Guard), Connor Boggs (Air National Guard), Wyatt Hunt (Army Infantry), and James Ratliff (Army National Guard. On hand for the signing were local military representatives, family members, friends, and school staff and administrators.

The ceremony goes hand-in-hand with the school’s new designation as a Purple Star school. The Ohio Department of Education & Workforce coordinates the Purple Star program which recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and family’s connected to the nation’s military. A school that completes the program’s required activities earns the Purple Star Award. Jonathan Alder earned the designation in April.

To be eligible for Purple Star status, a school must have a staff point-of-contact for military students and families. That liaison must complete professional development on special considerations for military students and families under federal law. That person also must complete an educational course related to military children and inform teachers of the considerations military students and families should receive. Additionally, the school must maintain a page on its website featuring resources for military families and contact information for the liaison.

Teachers Rick Kitchen and Chris Roberts serve as Jonathan Alder High School’s resource liaisons for military families.
