Drummer, bandleader, composer, and vocalist T.S. Monk, son of legendary jazz musician and composer Thelonious Monk, performed to a an eager house of Columbus jazz enthusiasts at CAPA’s Southern Theatre on April 10. Earlier that day, however, he played to a smaller crowd. Monk conducted a workshop for more than 50 fifth-grade music students at Highland Elementary. During the visit, he spoke about the history of the drum, jazz music, his family and his career. He also gave special instruction on improvisation, demonstrating with impromptu compositions on the school’s various drums. Students were also able to participate in a question and answer session, and get autographs afterwards. Monk is an avid supporter of music education, founding the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz to help preserve the art of jazz in future generations.
