It didn’t take long for Mount Sterling area residents to take advantage of a new health care option close to home.

Within six hours of opening on March 28, Madison Health Mount Sterling booked 24 patients for primary care appointments this week. Several patients also stopped in for physical therapy sessions and to schedule blood draws.

“In the community, there are lots of people talking about it. They’re all really excited,” said resident Debbie McClelland, who was travelling to Madison Health in London for knee replacement therapy but is now finishing it at the hospital’s new satellite location at 164 E. Main St. “It’s so nice not to have to drive.”

Evelyn Rice agrees. The Mount Sterling resident was driving to London every two weeks for blood draws. Now, she can get them done in Mount Sterling.

“It’s really going to save me time and gas money,” she said.

Madison Health Mount Sterling is the hospital’s newest satellite location. The 3,300 square-foot facility is attached to the Mount Sterling Community Center and offers primary care, outpatient laboratory services, and physical therapy.

The staff includes one primary care physician, patient access technicians to register patients, laboratory assistants, a physical therapist, and a rehabilitation services secretary. The space houses a lobby, registration desk, physical therapy room, lab room, a doctor’s office, and five exam rooms, with space to add a second primary care physician in the future.

“There’s so much promise here. It would be great if it just took off and did wonders,” said Wendi Isbell, a lab assistant at the new facility, as well as a Mount Sterling resident.

“The need for additional primary care and outpatient services was a request that had been made for quite a while, and it made sense for Madison Health to provide those services,” said Julie Akers, marketing coordinator for Madison Health. “Thanks to the generous support of the Mount Sterling community and the leadership at Madison Health, the entire project took less than a year to become a reality. It is definitely a reflection of the dedication both sides had to providing healthcare services to the community, close to home.”

Outpatient laboratory services are available Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (closed for lunch from noon to 1 p.m.). Physical therapy services are available Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m.-noon.

Dr. Gary Erdy, the primary care physician, is seeing patients Monday through Friday, with extended evening hours on Thursdays. He also sees patients at Madison Medical Center in London.

Erdy brings over 30 years of experience to Madison Health, having served as an emergency room and primary care doctor. He received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and doctor of medicine degree from The Ohio State University. He completed his family practice internship and residency at Mount Carmel Medical Center. He also has more than 15 years of clinical research experience, serving as principal investigator for many studies.

“Throughout my career and even within the changing climate of medicine, my passion for family medicine has only become stronger as I see an even greater need for caring and compassionate family physicians,” Erdy said.

Madison Health will host an open house at the new Mount Sterling location from 4 to 6 p.m. April 9.

For appointments with Dr. Erdy, call (740) 956-1360. For physical therapy appointments, call (740) 965-1357. Appointments are not needed for blood draws.
