The following holiday events are scheduled in South Charleston.
Christmas concerts
It’s time for the 28th Annual Christmas at the Opera House at South Charleston’s Town Hall, 35 S. Chillicothe St.
The concerts, set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5 and 2 p.m. Dec. 6, feature the South Charleston Community Adult Choir, a piano solo by Deanna Mattinson, and a piano duet by Betsy and Francesca Hansell.
Special features at Saturday’s concert include vocal solos by Sally Riker and The Charleston Brass. On Sunday, the Southeastern High School a cappella singers and concert band will perform.
The concerts showcase over 50 local performers. Admission is free. Donations for the South Charleston Heritage Commission will be accepted at the door. For more information, call (937) 462-8709.
Christmas in South Charleston
The South Charleston Community Club is sponsoring Christmas in South Charleston with activities for all ages from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 2. A parade steps off at 5 p.m. from Journey of Faith Church then proceeds north on Chillicothe Street. Santa Claus will be on hand for the children. Events include a cookie walk at the Methodist church, free cookies and coffee at Security National Bank, sandwiches, soup and desserts for purchase at the Catholic parish hall, and vendors with a variety of crafts at the Presbyterian church. More than 90 items have been donated for a raffle, and winning names will be drawn at 8 p.m.
New Year’s Eve Grand Ball
The South Charleston Heritage Commission will host its 10th Annual New Year’s Eve Grand Ball from 9 p.m. to midnight Dec. 31 at the South Charleston Opera House, 35 S. Chillicothe St. The evening features music and dancing from the Civil War era, Victorian-style desserts and tea sandwiches and a toast at midnight.
Early-bird ticket prices are $25 per person or $45 per couple through Dec. 25; after Dec. 25, the cost is a flat $30 per person. Admission is free for children younger than 10 years old.

Proceeds go to the upkeep of the Heritage Commission’s three historic properties: the opera house, DT&I depot museum and bicentennial log house.
