The Groveport Madison Board of Education approved its latest five year financial forecast, but a revised, more detailed version of the money plan is expected to be brought forth at its June meeting.
The board approved the forecast at its May 14 meeting to fulfill state filing requirements.
"This is not my final forecast," said Groveport Madison Treasurer Anthony Swartz. "This forecast has some minor updates from November 2007 and it meets the requirement for updating the forecast by May 31. My final five year forecast will be on the agenda for June. I am still working on expenditure areas necessary for an accurate forecast."
Board member John Kershner commended Swartz, who started work at Groveport Madison last November, for his work as treasurer in cleaning up the district’s finances. Kershner said Swartz’ expertise has led to the treasurer finding "pockets of money" the district didn’t know it had, such as $148,000 in a transportation account that can be used in the future to buy buses.
Supporting the arts
Board member Nathan Slonaker urged the community to support the Groveport Madison cultural and arts programs.
He said he was concerned by the poor audience attendance at the plays and concerts performed by the students.
"We have talent in this district," said Slonaker. "People don’t need to go to downtown Columbus to see great performances."
He suggested the various booster organizations get together and find ways to better market and promote the arts programs to the community.
Graduation
Groveport Madison High School will hold its graduation ceremonies on May 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial in downtown Columbus. A total of 364 graduates will receive diplomas.
