When the Winebrenner girls – Natalie, Hailey, Bentley and Mollie – heard that there are children who wake up in the hospital on Christmas morning, they knew they had to do something.

The idea that children wake up in a strange place without the comfort of their homes on Christmas pulled at the girls’ heart strings. Natalie, the oldest, quickly thought of a great idea. They would collect Christmas and holiday cards and send them to Nationwide Children’s hospital for all of the children. Natalie’s sisters excitedly agreed.

With determined minds, they started making Christmas cards. They wanted to be sure every kid woke up with a handmade card to put a smile on their face and warmth in their heart. We contacted the hospital to ask how many children were normally in the hospital on Christmas. They told us approximately 400. And so the girls’ mission began.

This has been a humbling experience for us as parents. These four girls who wish and hope for all the great Christmas present themselves made a decision to take action. In doing so, they managed to harness the true meaning of the Christmas season.

The target date was set for Dec. 16. The donation meeting was set with the wonderful people at Children’s Hospital. The girls counted the cards they had received from friends, family and even complete strangers who heard about the quest and decided to help.

The excitement grew and grew and grew, and when the count was over, their eyes were filled with cheer and accomplishment. They had collected 1,025 cards. They also received more than $350 in donations and many gloves, hats, socks and blankets. These four girls who had set out to collect 400 cards have shattered their expectations, with the help of friends, family, and others in and around the community and even as far as California.
The girls want to express their deepest gratitude for all the help and support.
