The Friends of the Mount Sterling Public Library is a new group formed by patrons focused on heightening the public’s awareness of the services the library offers. Their first project was promotion of the library’s 1-mill operating levy request, which appeared on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Linda Clemans, chairwoman of the Friends group, said approximately 12 volunteers are taking part so far. They will regroup after the election and the holidays to focus on other projects.

"It is unclear right now what projects we will focus on. We will wait and see what is needed and address the issue at that time," she said. "But we hope to see the library expand its hours, as well as offer more programs to the community."

Clemans said she has been a steady patron of the library since she was a little girl.

"I have seen the library transform from being small and old-fashioned to what it has become today—and it is still growing," she said.

Clemans raised her daughter as a patron of the library, and now her grandchildren are steady patrons, as well.

"This library serves the entire Madison Plains district. It’s not just for Mount Sterling citizens," Clemans said.

A big project on the library’s horizon is a building expansion. Library organizers want to cover the expansion’s cost by raising private donations. The features of the project would include:

o a new patron computer room;

o new room for visual media;

o new meeting rooms;

o new high-tech multi-purpose room;

o larger and more appropriate museum space and storage space;

o larger genealogy area;

o 29-car off-street parking lot;

o amphitheater for outdoor activities;

o expanded children’s area;

o improved adult section; and

o satellite pick-up and drop-off points to improve service to the entire district.

The Friends group likely will be integral in getting the word out about the building project.

In the meantime, the Friends are holding a raffle at the library until Nov. 20. The winner will receive a tub of Tupperware. The cost is $1 for two tickets or $5 for 12.
