A fishing derby will be held from 8 a.m. to noon June 14 at the pond beside the Duke Realty farmhouse on State Route 29 in front of Restoration Hardware in West Jefferson.

The catch-and-release program is geared toward children. Anglers under the age of 16 do not have to have a fishing license.

“But you have to bring your own bait” and fishing poles, said West Jefferson Mayor Darlene Steele.

In a catch-and-release format, children return their catches to the pond.

“They won’t take them home and won’t have them for supper,” Steele said.

Prizes will be awarded in various categories. There is no charge to participate. Hot dogs will be served.

For more information, contact Mayor Darlene Steele at (614) 879-7674. Hurt-Battelle Memorial Library in West Jefferson has a limited number of fishing poles available to borrow; call 879-8448.
