London City Council is officially recognizing May as National Bike Month and May 12-16 as London Bicycle Week.

The League of American Bicyclists has celebrated National Bike Month for over 50 years. London Bicycle Week is something new.

The Friends of Madison County Parks and Trails (FMCPT) is behind the local awareness effort. The group serves as stewards of the section of the Ohio to Erie Trail multi-use path that runs through Madison County. They also organize and promote cycling related events.

Wayne Roberts, FMCPT executive director, said plans for this year’s celebration are low-key and focused on building awareness. The group will take part in Stanley Electric’s Safety Day on May 14, an annual event for the company’s employees. FMCPT also will host a full moon bike ride on the evening of May 14 and a fundraiser at Los Mariachis May 27-28. The goal is to set the stage for a large-scale, interactive celebration in 2015.

“Next year, we want to hold what is known as a ‘ciclovias.’ It’s basically an open street initiative,” Roberts said. “The idea is that we will close down a street sometime during that third week of May and line it with activity hubs. The theme would be active and healthy lifestyles.”

Though nothing is set, Roberts said an ideal location would be Walnut Street in front of the London Community Center, with additional activity hubs situated at Cowling Park and on the route between the park and the community center.

“We want this to be something big in London, along the lines of the Strawberry Festival and Rib & Jazz Fest,” Roberts said. “We want to get lots of people involved.”

He said FMCPT hopes to recruit area schools, Madison County Hospital, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, sports groups, farmer’s market vendors and the like to take part.

“Anything we can do to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Anyone who has suggestions for next year’s celebration or who would like to help with planning can contact FMCPT via email at or by calling Wayne Roberts at (614) 205-6754.
