Firefighters, flowers, and cat fundraisers

What do Pleasant Township firefighters have in common with a resilient cat who survived five days with a jar stuck on its head? They both came together to host fundraising events this past weekend for the benefit of animals and humans alike. On May 10-12, the Pleasant Township Fire Department hosted its annual flower sale to raise money for its union, Local 2937. Using the proceeds of the flower sale, the department is able to hold a number of events throughout the year to teach children fire safety and also feed the local community during the Breakfast with Santa event. On one of the flower sale days, the department welcomed Kim Wonacott Hartley with Tame A Cat Rescue. She was selling jewelry to raise money for the rescue organization as they care for their new charge, a 5-month-old feline affectionately named Jarhead who was found last month in the area with a plastic jar stuck on its head. Facilitated by Wonacott Hartley, Scar Shine with Rico Pet Recovery, and a slew of concerned residents, they were able to trap the cat after he hid in insulation underneath a mobile home and bring it back to health. Shown here among the flowers at the fundraising event On May 11 are Pleasant Township Firefighter Josh Krebs and Jarhead. Although the department was not dispatched for this particular rescue mission, the department often rescues animals in distress.
Recovering from the trauma of his recent ordeal, Jarhead relaxes and soaks in the sight of beautiful flowers. Wonacott Hartley said he was given that name in honor of the U.S. Marines. “He is resilient, just like they are.” Wonacott Hartley is currently trying to tame the feral cat and transition him to a loving and forever home in the future.
