The Prairie Township Community Center is celebrating the season with fall events for the community.
The center will host the third annual Pumpkin Swim. Taking place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21, the event is for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old. During the event, children can swim in the center’s pool and pick their own floating pumpkins. Afterward they can decorate their pumpkins with arts and crafts items before taking them home.
“Something new we are hoping to do this year is have a water balloon sling shot,” said James Gant, director of the community center. “However, we are still trying to workout the logistics of this and make it safe for everyone.”
Other fall themed activities taking place at the community center include the annual Trick-or-Treat Trial. During this event, kids can dress up and go booth-to-booth in the gym and get treats from local businesses. This event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26.
The community center also has a variety of new programming coming up to attract more members. Among these activities is programs for preschoolers, children who attend home school and even new recreation classes.
“We started a preschool open gym that will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays,” Gant said. “The cost is $2 per child and they can play in our gym and work off some energy. During the fall and winter kids are cooped up inside, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to let them burn off some energy.”
The center also will be offering a new home school recreation class for kids who attend homeschool and want to play with other homeschool kids.
Gant said the reason they decided to create this class is because the westside has a large number of homeschool students, so they thought this was an opportunity to let children interact.
“We also are offering new classes like ballet and a strength and conditioning program,” Gant said. “For ballet, we thought it was great to let kids try out a few classes and see if they like it. For the strength and conditioning program, we are working with middle school and high school athletes on training to meet their goals.”
