For 2015, Ohio’s primary election date is May 5. In Madison County, seats are up for election in West Jefferson and London. The filing deadline for candidates and issues is Feb. 4.

The one seat up for election in West Jefferson is that of mayor. At least three candidates must file in order for this race to appear on the primary election ballot. If only one or two candidates file, they will automatically move on to the Nov. 3 general election. Currently, Darlene Steele holds the seat. The mayor’s term is for four years. It is a non-partisan position.

In London, candidates must declare their partisanship. A primary election will be held if two or more candidates of the same party file to run for the same office. As long as this happens in at least one of the London races, all London races will appear on the primary ballot. Otherwise, unopposed candidates automatically move on to the Nov. 3 general election.

The offices up for election in London are as follows:

  • Mayor (four-year term). Currently, David Eades, a Republican, holds the seat. Eades has already announced that he does not plan to run for re-election.
  • Auditor (four-year term). Currently, Kathleen Hensel, an independent, holds the seat.
  • Law director (four-year term). Currently Zahid Siddiqi, a Republican, holds the seat.
  • Council president (two-year term). Currently, Patrick Closser holds the seat.
  • Councilman, First Ward (two-year term). Currently, Trint Hatt holds the seat.
  • City councilman, Second Ward (two-year term). Currently, Richard Minner, a Republican, holds the seat.
  • City councilman, Third Ward (two-year term). Currently, Steven Scaggs, a Republican, holds the seat.
  • City councilman, Fourth Ward (two-year term). Currently, Rex Castle, a Republican, holds the seat.
  • City councilmen at-large (two-year terms). Three at-large seats are up for election. In this case, four or more candidates from the same party would have to file in order for the race to appear on the primary ballot. Currently, Rodney Lauer, Roger Morris and Jason Schwaderer hold the seats. All three are Republicans.

Issues

To date, no issues have been filed with the Madison County Board of Elections for the May 5 ballot.
