Fatal apartment fire in Plain City

At approximately 8:31 p.m. on Jan. 31, Pleasant Valley Joint Fire District received numerous 911 calls regarding a structure on fire in the Pleasant Valley Colony Apartments in Plain City.

Firefighters arrived minutes later to find heavy fire extending from the front and back of the building. They aggressively attacked the flames and searched the apartments involved in the fire. Officers from the Plain City Police Department assisted in evacuating residents, many with mobility issues, from their homes.

Once the fire was contained, crews discovered that the 73-year-old female occupant of the primary fire residence was unable to escape the smoke and flames and perished in the incident.

A total of 51 firefighters and 19 firefighting apparatus were dispatched to the emergency. The Pleasant Valley Joint Fire District was the department of jurisdiction. Providing automatic aid were Jerome Township Fire, Washington Township Fire, Norwich Township Fire, Concord Township Fire, Jefferson Township Fire, Marysville Fire, the Plain City Police Department, American Red Cross, the village of Plain City Water Department, and the Madison County Coroner’s Office.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The deceased was transported to the

Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for autopsy. The victim’s name is being withheld pending proper notification of the family.
