Family Fun Festival to benefit hog barn fund

The Madison County Junior Fair Livestock Sale Committee will hold its 2nd Annual Family Fun Festival from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 11 at the fairgrounds, 305 Elm St., London.

Last year, the event kicked off a fundraising campaign for the new Eby Youth Arena and Coughlin Community Center. This year, the committee is raising money for a new hog barn.

“The old building has run its course,” said Darrell Champer, sale committee president. “The new one will be the same size or bigger, depending on how much money we raise, and it will be more modern.”

The committee has already collected about half of the estimated $400,000 needed for the project. Beck’s Hybrids pledged $50,000. Other donors also have come forward. The Madison County commissioners are matching $2 in county funds for every $1 donated privately.

“The idea is to have the new hog barn up by next year’s fair,” Champer said.

The Family Fun Festival will help to raise money for the project, as well as serve as a chance for people to get together.

“We have a lot of different activities planned so people can hang out all day and have a good time,” Champer said.

The schedule includes a craft show, corn hole and euchre tournaments, live music by Matt Rees and Tim Omark, DJ and open mic time, trick-or-treating and children’s activities. Food vendors will be on site all day. Also, the Madison County 4-H program is incorporating its annual recognition ceremony into the festival.

Live and silent auctions will feature a wide variety of items, from themed baskets donated by 4-H clubs to a meal prepared by chef Bryan Wilson, a former Madison County 4-Her and Madison-Plains High School graduate. Among the many other auction items are a hunting package for four people at Elk Ridge Game Farm in Bucyrus, Ohio, and a Columbus Crew signed soccer ball and four game tickets.

For those who want to make a weekend of it, camping is available on the fairgrounds Friday and Saturday nights. The cost is $25 per night.
