The London Rotary Club is pleased to honor senior Emily Leach as London High School’s May Student of the Month.
Students of the month are selected by school administrators based on their academic and extracurricular achievement and positive character.
Emily has a 4.06 grade point average, is ranked 13th in her class, and states her favorite class is biomedical innovations. Emily has completed Project Lead The Way, a four-year STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program.
She has been on the Merit Honor for four years and is a member of the National Honor Society, serving as secretary her junior and senior years. She joined Quick Recall her junior and senior years and was part of this year’s league champion team. She has served as secretary of her class the past two years and is a member of the Diversity Club. Emily also played varsity tennis for three years.
When asked to name a school staff person who inspires her, she named science teacher Tyler Wallin.
“Mr. Wallin has been my teacher for the STEM Project Lead The Way (PLTW) for the past four years. He has encouraged me to learn new things every day, as well as given me the confidence to pursue a career in STEM,” she said.
About Emily, Wallin stated, “Emily Leach has been instrumental in the success of the first group of graduating seniors within the Project Lead The Way biomedical science program. She was one of over 60 students to start the program and is now one of three who have progressed through the entire program. She will be graduating with an extremely small minority of students throughout the country who can say they were able to complete this four-year pathway.
“To put her accomplishment in perspective, PLTW has 2.4 million students who are taking at least one course in their programs, and the U.S. had 49.4 million students, and by her not only taking one but completing an entire program sets her far apart from her peers,” Wallin continued. “She is one student within the small, less than 5 percent of students who have access to this program, and about 12 percent of these students finish this entire program, showcasing her resilience and drive to further seek out an education at The Ohio State University.
“Emily is a stellar student, humble, and will make tremendous strides as she begins her next chapter at college studying neuroscience. She will make an extreme, lasting impact not only to London High School as a graduating senior but to our society as a whole as she embarks on the start of her exciting and challenging STEM career.”
Emily plans to attend The Ohio State University and double major in neuroscience and psychology. She is the daughter of Tyrone and Stephanie Leach of London.
The London Rotary Club has a proud history dating back to 1929. It is a member of Rotary International, a volunteer organization of 1.2 million businesses and professional leaders united worldwide to provide humanitarian service and help build good will and peace.
