To help the community prepare for the upcoming Plain City Big Band Dance, the Friends of the Plain City Public Library will offer free swing dance lessons at the library, 305 W. Main St. Space is limited, so registration is required.

A series of three lessons will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 8, April 15 and April 29. Couples and singles may register. For more information or to register, call 614-873-4912, ext. 21.

Lesson participants will be encouraged to show off their skills at the  Plain City Big Band Dance on May 2 at the St. Joseph Activity Center, 670 W. Main St., Plain City. Thanks to sponsorship of the Convalarium at Indian Run in Dublin, the Friends of the Plain City Public Library, and St. Joseph in Plain City, the 1940s style dance will be free of charge.

"It will be a step back in time," said Chris Long, one of the dance organizers from the Plain City Public Library. "We’re hoping to create a sense of nostalgia and a true community style event."

An opening ceremony featuring the Plain City VFW Post  will begin at 7 p.m.  The live dance band, Classic Swing, will perform vintage dance favorites until 10.

Dancers of all expertise and spectators are welcome to attend and are encouraged to dress in 1940s style attire. Members of the Plain City Historical Society will be on hand to help reminisce about the heritage of Plain City and surrounding areas.  During the dance, a scrolling slide show presentation will feature historic photos from the 1940s and ’50s. Light refreshments will be served.

There also will be a picture honor roll of local veterans, past and present. If you would like a photo of your veteran included in the presentation, please e-mail it and the veteran’s name, date of service, branch of military, and a list of any honors to clong@plaincitylib.org. Or drop off a copy of the photograph and information at the library during regular operating hours—10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
