CW to hold grand opening for new pickleball courts

The city of Canal Winchester will hold a grand opening of the McGill Park pickleball courts on July 18. The public is invited to join city staff for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the park, located at 6725 Lithopolis-Winchester Road, at 5 p.m. to commemorate the opening.

Following the ceremony, the inaugural game will be played by Mayor Joe Steager and Council President Will Bennett. The city will also hand out custom pickleballs to the first 100 guests.

Construction of the 84-acre park began in 2021. The first section opened in July 2022 with amenities including soccer fields, a nature themed playground, walking trails, and an open shelter house. Construction on the courts started earlier this year.

“When planning for the park, we knew adding pickleball courts was a priority for our community,” said Mayor Joe Steager. “Since starting construction, people have been asking when they will be ready or stopping at the park to check on construction. I expect them to get a lot of use.”

Following the opening, the pickleball courts will be open daily from dawn to 10 p.m., with lighting available for evening play. Visitors must provide their own equipment. The five courts are available on a first come, first served basis, although visitors are asked to be considerate of their playing time and to share with others. Rental opportunities for special events will be available later this year.

Construction at McGill Park continues with future phases adding more attractions such as multipurpose fields, a dog park, and an event center.
