The Groveport Madison Cruiser varsity wrestling team is on a quest this year to win yet another Ohio Capital Conference championship.

The Cruisers won three straight OCC titles from 2017 to 2019 and the program has a long history of championships dating back to the days of the old Mid-Eight League of the 1960s and early 1970s.

These days high school athletic programs are also dealing with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the havoc it can create on scheduling.

“Currently, wrestling is full speed ahead,” said Groveport Madison Athletic Director Steve Petros. “We will continue to temperature check every athlete, every day. This isn’t a requirement, however, we will do everything to keep our athletes safe.”

Petros said that, as of now, the Cruiser wrestling schedule remains unchanged.

“That could change and there is the possibility of meets getting cancelled (due to the coronavirus),” said Petros. “If so, we would probably move to more duals and tri meets.”

The Cruisers have a new head coach this year who replaces previous coach Brian Brison, who resigned last spring.

“Our new coach is Kwan Bailey, a Cruiser grad,” said Petros. “He had a very accomplished career in both high school and college.”

Added Petros, “We think we have a very competitive team this year.”
