Bridges Community Action Partnership is looking to the community for help in stocking Madison County’s homeless shelter with basic supplies.
Donations can be dropped off at the Community Action office, 306 Lafayette St., London, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. (The office is closed from 12 to 12:30 p.m. each day for lunch.) Needed items include plastic eating utensils, plastic cups, napkins, paper plates, toilet paper, laundry detergent, trash bags, dish soap, bath towels, washcloths, hygiene products, hand soap, and cleaning supplies (disinfectant wipes, toilet bowl cleaner, bathroom cleaner spray).
The homeless shelter is open to individuals or families who are experiencing homelessness. Priority is given to families. The shelter is a single-family home that can house two families at a time. Each family has their own bedroom and bathroom. Participants share common areas such as the kitchen and living room. The program provides housing for up to 30 days.
Community Action staff helps participants transition to other housing and refers them to the Salvation Army for further assistance which can include money for first month’s rent and deposit. The staff also can provide referrals to other agencies and programs for help with everything from mental health care to job search and education.
“The shelter gives local residents a place to stay–a place to have a roof over their heads–so they’re not living in a car when it’s cold out or living on land in a tent,” said Jenifer Weber, shelter manager. “It’s definitely a need in Madison County.”
