Westland High School qualified five wrestlers for the 2021 Division I District Championships, held March 6-7 at Hilliard Darby High School and two will move on to the state championship on March 13-14. At the district tournaments, the top 16 wrestlers in 14 weight classes face off having earned a trip to this level by being one of the top four in the sectionals the previous week. The top six earn a place, but only the top four become state qualifiers.
Westland junior Jakob Hurley will be going back to the state championship. Hurley, in the 152-pound weight class, finished this season at 31-6 and is shown here on his way to a first round 6-1 win over Doanavyn Watts of Pickerington North. Hurley picked up two more wins on the way to the finals before falling to Olentangy Liberty senior Lucas Uliano placing second.
Tyler Jude of Westland High School worked his way to the top at the Division 1 District Championship to face off against Jaxson Rosselli of Olentangy Liberty for the 106-pound title. Both wrestlers had worked their way to the final by pinning or tech falling (15 point advantage) all of their opponents. Jude is shown here trying to push Rosselli to his back on the way to a 12-8 win to take the Central District Championship and earn his first trip to the state stage for the Westland junior.
