Summer Jam West cancelled

It is with heavy hearts that we announce our decision to cancel the 2020 Summer Jam West festival.

We were looking forward to providing a sense of normalcy and a much-needed celebration for our community with a day full of music, art, and fun. However, with no lifting of restrictions on gatherings in sight and no clear picture of what the reality of those gatherings would ultimately look like, we decided it’s best to put the health and safety of our vendors, bands, artists, and community ahead of everything else.

We have our sights set on July 10, 2021 in anticipation of bringing you the best Summer Jam West festival yet.

As an organization, we still have much to celebrate. Soon, Michael and Chris from Artisan Rooms will begin the Color Your World Green mural project at 3045 Sullivant Avenue. We eagerly anticipate watching the progress and are planning a community dedication as circumstances will allow.

This was not an easy decision for us, but we know it’s in everyone’s best interest. We’re all in this together.

Please stay safe, stay healthy and stay kind.

Sincerely,
Your Summer Jam West Team

Hilltop Bean Dinner cancelled

Due to concerns over the coronavirus restrictions for at least the next several weeks, and uncertainty about when it will be safe for people to be part of a large crowd again, the Hilltop Business Association (HBA) has decided to cancel the Hilltop Bean Dinner for 2020.

This is a hard decision, as the HBA has sponsored the Hilltop Bean Dinner for nearly 100 years now. However, public health and safety is everyone’s first concern. In addition, the HBA spends nearly $7,500 to put on the Bean Dinner each year, and it seems unwise to expend those funds for an event that may well be cancelled by the government.

The HBA plans to be back in 2021 with the best Bean Dinner ever. We will be doing what we can to improve conditions on the Hilltop in the meantime.

Fish Fry and Cruise-in Cancelled

We wanted to give an update regarding the 2020 Prairie Township Firefighter’s Association Fish Fry and Cruise-In, scheduled for June 26-27.

As you know, the Fish Fry is a beloved 70-year tradition in our community. The Fire Department views this as our favorite opportunity to interact with our residents each year.

That’s why this decision, was not made lightly. However, your health and the health of our members in a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic is more important than even a longstanding tradition like this one. We made the difficult choice as an organization to not hold a 2020 Fish Fry.

We want you to know that we spent a great deal of time and energy weighing carry-out and delivery options, and thinking about how those could be done safely. But as we played them out, the risks continued to outweigh the benefits in each scenario. In the end, our residents’ and our first responders’ health and safety is of the utmost priority, and cannot be compromised.

We look forward to using this time to put extra thought into planning, so that 2021’s Fish Fry & Cruise-In is the largest and most successful our community has ever seen. We commit that to you!
