Book sale
The Harrisburg Library, 1036 High St., sponsors an ongoing book sale Monday through Thursday from 1:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.
Some books sell for $5 a bag, others range from $10 cents to $1. The library accepts donations of all books and movies but they ask you not send magazines. All items must be clean and in good condition.
All proceeds benefit the Harrisburg Library Association. Donations are tax deductible.
Adoptable cats at PetSmart
The Capital Area Humane Society will offer cats for adoption at PetSmart in Grove City from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of each month.
Event dates at the PetSmart in Grove City, 1743 Stringtown Road, include: June 1 and June 22.
Screenings at Evans
Amity Care Home Health Services provides a nurse at the E.L. Evans Senior Center in Grove City to do free diabetic screening and blood pressure testing every third Wednesday of the month from 9 to 11 a.m. Cholesterol testing is available for $5 per test. Local authors need old photos
Local authors Janet Shailer and Laura Lanese are seeking photographs to be incorporated into a regional history book about Grove City to be published by Arcadia Publishing in fall 2008 as part of Arcadia’s "Images of America" series.
This project is also part of the local Attics to Archives program and the scanned copies will become part of the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society’s permanent collection. All originals will be returned as promptly as possible to the owners.
The historical society is looking for old photographs (pre-1952) larger than 3 inches by 3 inches in size and smaller than 11 inches by 14 inches. Pictures of landscapes and buildings are most important. Selected photos may be included in the Arcadia book.

Pirates invade LTOB
The Little Theatre off Broadway in Grove City presents "The Pirates of Penzance," a comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan and directed by Kate Charlesworth-Miller.
Frederic, apprenticed to a band of tenderhearted pirates, rejoices in having fulfilled his indentures and prepares to return to respectable society. His plans are thwarted by a bevy of beauties, an unfortunate birthday and his own sense of duty. The merry pirates, a bumbling major general and a timid constabulary contribute to a cacophony silenced only by Queen Victoria’s name.
The show runs on Fridays and weekends through May 24. Little Theatre off Broadway is located at 3891 Broadway. Tickets are $12; senior tickets $10.

Teen OVI watch
The Columbus Division of Police will be conducting an enforcement operation now through May 31 for the prom season. The division will have additional traffic officers on Columbus freeways looking for impaired drivers, safety belt violators and aggressive drivers.
Officers from the Traffic Bureau will be stepping up their enforcement of drivers operating vehicles while intoxicated by maintaining a high profile and concentrating their efforts on identifying and stopping OVI offenders, especially juveniles suspected of drinking.
Parents are encouraged to talk to their children and warn them about the dangers and consequences associated with drinking and driving.

The Sherman Lodge 470 in Harrisburg started its annual fish fry. The event will run every Saturday, except for holiday weekends, until the last weekend in August from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Students dance
Students journey through time with Dancing Through Ohio History, at 1 p.m. May 21 at the Capitol Theatre, 77 South High Street. About 400 fourth and fifth grade students from six Columbus city schools will perform as the culmination of BalletMet’s Momentum, a yearlong in-school program of BalletMet’s Department of Education. Youth tennis program
A youth tennis program will be held at Grove City High School for South-Western City School students in grades 5-9, June 16-20 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The program will emphasize learning the fundamentals of tennis. Chef comes to UMC
The Grove City United Methodist Church youth group will sponsor a six week cooking class to raise funds for summer programs.
Every Friday at 7:30 p.m. the youth group will provide a professional chef to teach participants the joys and pains of the kitchen. Chef Phil Campbell will be featuring classes such as Gourmet at the Campsite, How to Soufflé, Graduation Party Prep and more. Each session will be $20 per person or $30 per couple.

Bowling for charity
Saxton Real Estate is sponsoring a Bowling for Relay for Life event, for all proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society. The event will be held at Western Lanes, 500 Georgesville Road, on June 7, from 6-8:30 p.m. Cost is $20 for adults and $9 for each child, and includes, pizza, soda and a maximum of three games of bowling. Charity golf at Pinnacle
First Service Federal Credit Union will hold its’ fifth annual charity golf outing on June 24 at the Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City.
Teams of four will have the opportunity to participate in a golf scramble to help raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network with proceeds to benefit Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. During this year’s event, participants will enjoy 18 holes of golf with cart, a boxed lunch, skill contests, a hole-in-one prize, door prizes, a dinner buffet, and a silent auction.

Town Center plan on web
Grove City’s Development Department announced the launch of the Town Center plan on the Grove City Web site to keep business and property owners and residents informed and involved in the planning process.
The city has commissioned Lincoln Street Studio to perform the study resulting in revitalization recommendations.
"The Town Center is a critical element of Grove City’s history and growth, this study will assist the city, businesses and residents in developing a long range plan for our downtown area." said Mayor Ike Stage.

Safety Town
The Jackson Township firefighters, Local #2672 IAFF, will host Safety Town 2008. Safety Town will begin June 12 and continue until June 20 at J. C. Sommer Elementary School in Grove City with both a morning and afternoon session.
Safety Town is designed to teach valuable safety lessons to children entering kindergarten while helping them adapt to the elementary school environment. Children must be pre-registered to attend and must be a resident of Grove City, Jackson Township, or the Village of Urbancrest. You may register your child during regular business hours (8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the Jackson Township Fire Department, 3650 Hoover Road.

Educational Foundation golf outing
The South-Western Schools Educational Foundation is hosting its annual golf outing on June 9 at Oakhurst Country Club.
The cost for the shotgun start, four-person scramble is $75 per person or $300 for a group of four. The package includes lunch, golf cart, door prizes and trophies for the winners.

GCHS basketball camp

Memorial Day Parade
The American Legion post 164 in Grove City will sponsor the Memorial Day Parade on May 26 in downtown Grove City.
The parade will start on Broadway at Our Lady of Perpetual Help and will end at the Grove City Cemetery on Grove City Road. The parade begins at 11 a.m.
The post will also hold services at Greenhill Cemetery at 8 a.m. and Concord Cemetery at 9 a.m.

Survivor’s dinner
The Grove City Relay for Life is looking for cancer survivors to join them for their Survivor Dinner which kicks off the Relay for Life June 20-21 at Grove City High School.
The dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. on June 20 in the Grove City High School commons area where the program will include a featured speaker that will update the guests on the latest in cancer treatment and prevention. Each survivor can bring a guest to the dinner, which is being provided at no cost, thanks to the generosity of the Grove City Rotary and Larry and Sue Corbin who donate the food.
After the dinner, the survivors are welcomed to the track to take the ceremonial first lap of the 2008 Relay for Life.

Pug picnic
Ohio Pug Rescue will be welcoming all pugs and their people to the 10th Annual Pug Picnic and Reunion.
This event will be held on May 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Whitehall Community Park, 402 N. Hamilton Road in Whitehall. There will be pug contests, raffle of pug items, vendors and a potluck lunch. The event celebrates pugs and raises money to support the rescue and placement of pug dogs from around the state of Ohio.
