Assembling at 8 a.m., with a thermometer reading of 32 degrees, at the “base,” which was provided by American Legion Camp Chase Post 98, these volunteers were greeted by Greater Hilltop Area Commission representatives Sue Laughlin and Chuck Patterson as well as Hilltop Business Association representative John Lowry.

They donned fluorescent vests and began picking up litter on Sullivant Avenue at Hague Avenue and points east and west. Helping to coordinate the clean-up were Robert Seed, volunteer coordinator with Keep Columbus Beautiful and Erica North, who organized the recruits and got them where they needed to be.

The next day, members of Hillcrest Baptist Church left their morning service to clean the grounds of West Broad Elementary School and the sidewalks and gutters between the school and the church, which is located at West Broad and Eldon Avenue.

In addition to the many parishioners that gathered trash, another group painted a mural on the side of the building that formerly served as a food pantry and is now the location of the church’s youth ministry. A third group went to the Refuge Ministries house on Princeton Avenue to assist with rehabilitation of the home and a fourth group visited the Franklin Woods convalescent facility on Old Clime Road.
