The Columbus Children’s Choir New World Singers will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 29 at First United Methodist Church, 52 N. Main St., London.
The concert is a preview of their upcoming trip to Llangollen, Wales, where they will compete in the International Musical Eisteddfod competition. The group earned its spot in the event through a competitive recording round.
“Not only is it a prestigious invitation, it’s a life changing experience for our singers,” said Jeanne Wohlgamuth, artistic director, of the 11-day tour.
The Columbus Children’s Choir will celebrate its 25th anniversary beginning this June and has recently enjoyed two special awards. Wohlgamuth was named this year’s Educator of the Year by the Organization of American Kodály Educators, while the New World Singers won the American Prize in Choral Performance, youth choir division in 2018-19.
The New World Singers consists of more than 70 vocalists, ranging in age from sixth grade through 12 grade. Two local singers are part of group. Alex Tewalt, a freshman at London High School, is new to the group this year. Luke Peart, a junior at London High School, has been a member of the group for seven years.
The concert is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be collected. All proceeds will go toward the trip to Wales, set for July 4-15.
