Check out these pets up for adoption

(Posted July 26, 2021)

The following are among the pets up for adoption at the Humane Society of Madison County (HSMC). If you are interested in adopting a pet, fill out an application online at or call the shelter at (614) 879-8368.

Kira is a 2- to 3-year-old tuxedo domestic short hair who absolutely loves to cuddle up and give affection. She came to the shelter after being found in a carrier off to the side of routes 56 and 71. You’d never guess she had a rough start before making her way to the shelter. She’s been nothing but cuddles since she first arrived. She’s very playful and loves to keep a keen eye on her surroundings. She doesn’t get along with dogs or other cats, so she should be the only pet in the household.

Adoption fees are $80 for kittens up to 6 months old and $60 for cats 7 months and older. The fee includes a FeLV/FIV test, spay or neuter, shots, deworming, and a one-year rabies shot (if old enough). Fees can be paid by cash or credit card.

Mickey arrived at the shelter as a stray at the end of June. He is a 7-year-old German short hair pointer mix weighing about 55 pounds. He is an extremely sweet and a happy guy that loves everyone he meets. He loves to be out and about with the staff and volunteers, and he will do anything you ask him to for a snack.

This guy could run around for hours. He loves to chase any toy. You would not believe that this guy is 7 years old by the amount of energy he has, but what Mickey loves most of all is snuggling up to someone for some love. He loves other dogs a little too much. He often comes off as rude or pushy because he likes to be up in other dogs’ faces trying to play with them which can put some dogs off. As far as kitties, Mickey could care less about them. He just sniffed them and walked away when shelter staff took him for a visit to the kitty room.

We are not sure how this guy would feel about children, but we would like to see him go to a home with no small children; due to his energy, he might knock down a small child. Mickey knows his basic commands and loves to keep his kennel clean and tidy. Whoever adopts this handsome guy will be one lucky family.

The shelter’s adoption fees for dogs are as follows:  shelter dogs, $150; prison dogs, $200; puppies, $250; popular pure-breeds, $400. Fees includes a Home Again microchip, shots, deworming, heartworm testing (if old enough), spay or neuter, and a one-year rabies shot (if old enough). All dogs that are adopted must leave with a county license at an additional cost of $17. The license fee is cash only. Adoption fees can be paid by credit card or cash.
