Members of the London chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently met with the Madison County commissioners and London Mayor Patrick J. Closser for the signing of Constitution Week proclamations.

On Sept. 17, communities across the country will ring bells at 4 p.m. in recognition of Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23. Sharon Dillion, Constitution Week chairman, arranged for London First United Methodist Church and St. Patrick Catholic Church to ring bells.

In 1955, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set a week of observance for the foundation of the American form of government. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the resolution into law on Aug. 2, 1956. President George W. Bush declared the inception of Constitution Week in 2002.

DAR’s commitment is to educate the public about the Constitution, which was adopted by the American Congress of the Confederation on Sept. 17, 1787. This year marked the 65th anniversary of Constitution Week.

The Madison County commissioners signed a proclamation recognizing Sept. 17-23 as Constitution Week. On hand for the signing were: (from left) Sharon Dillion, Constitution Week chairperson for the London chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); Commissioner Tony Xenikis; Bonnie Stout, DAR chapter vice regent; and Rob Slane, county administrator.
