Celebrate history at Encampment

Take part in Grove City’s heritage and life in America in the mid-19th century with visitors of all ages at the Grove City Encampment.

Experience vintage sports and music and discover cultural artifacts from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, June 7, in Century Village at Fryer Park, 4185 Orders Road.

View living historians representing the homesteaders, visit the turn-of-the-century blacksmith displays and demonstrations, travel back in time as you stroll through the log cabin, dry goods store and other historical buildings including the schoolhouse where you can participate in classroom lessons including a traditional spelling bee. Visitors can throw a tomahawk or try their hand at shooting and learn about gun safety with the 4-H Shooters Club.

Spend time with historical fiction author Carolyn Shotsky as she explores the raid of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan. Try homemade bean soup and cornbread prepared over a fire.

“This is one of the city’s tough-to-top family events. Many of the demonstrations cleverly explain our community’s history by letting visitors experience the chores of our forefathers in the 1800s,” said Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage.

At 1 p.m., watch the Ohio Village Muffins play 1860s baseball in authentic-style uniforms. Period musicians are featured throughout the day with a focus on traditional bluegrass music. Live entertainment includes Slate Ridge Bluegrass Band at noon, the Open Rail Bluegrass Band at 1:45 p.m. and Out of Mind Bluegrass at 3:30 p.m. Visit with members of the Veterans Administration, Grove City Community Based Outpatient Clinic.

This event is presented annually by the city of Grove City and the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society. Admission is free, but donations to the food pantry are appreciated. Food and refreshments are available for sale, sponsored by the Grove City Kiwanis.
