Business departs Groveport

A long time commercial operation in the village of Groveport is pulling up stakes and heading for Texas and Maryland.

Groveport Village Administrator Jon Crusey told Groveport Village Council at its Jan. 14 meeting that RadioShack plans to close its distribution center, located at 4343 Williams Road, on or around April 25.

The closing will mean the loss of 69 jobs in the village.

The approximately 260,000 square foot RadioShack distribution center opened in  Groveport in the early 1970s.

According to Charles Hodges, director for media relations for RadioShack Corporation, "After conducting an in-depth study of our distribution cost structure and network capacity, we decided to discontinue operations at this facility as part of our continuing focus on reducing costs and improving efficiency within all our operations. The operations are being absorbed by RadioShack distribution facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, and Haggerstown, Maryland."

"We’ve taken quite a hit recently," said Councilman Ed Rarey, in reference to RadioShack’s departure along with the closing of Sofa Express on South Hamilton Road last fall, which resulted in the loss of around 160 jobs.

However, Crusey and Development Director Jeff Green told council that Whirlpool will be moving into part of the former Toys R’ Us building in Groveport Commerce Park, which could offset the loss of Sofa Express jobs.

Crusey stated, that while there are some vacant properties in the village’s industrial parks, the market is fluid.

"There’s still a strong demand," said Crusey. "Opus and Duke Realty are still building (in Groveport Commerce Park) and they wouldn’t be doing so if there weren’t a demand for space."

Crusey also added that some of the vacant warehouse space in the village is present because, though a business may have left, it may still be under a lease agreement for the building and must continue to pay its lease until it expires. So, since lease payments are still being received, the property owner does not have an urgent need to immediately fill the space.
