The green fields of Groveport Park will be a softball battleground when Groveport hosts the 2008 "Battle of I-270" softball tournament.

Eight, co-ed, adult, slow pitch softball teams will square off for championship bragging rights on Groveport Park’s diamonds 2, 3, and 5 on Aug. 23 beginning at 9 a.m. Each team will have five female and five male players.

"This tournament is a great way to work together with connecting communities and combine our resources to serve our participants," said Groveport Parks and Recreation Sports and Fitness Manager Stephania Peyton.

The competing teams will represent the town where their home league plays. The squads will come from Dublin, Grove City, Gahanna, Upper Arlington, Grandview, Hilliard, New Albany and Groveport

"The team that wins their actual league is invited to the tournament," said Peyton.  It (The Battle of I-270) is a champions of champions tournament."

The leagues are still winding down their season ending tournaments so the exact league champions are not yet known, according to Peyton.

Earlier this year Groveport hosted the Battle of I-270 basketball tournament at the Groveport Recreation Center. The village’s facilities were also a factor in landing the Battle of I-270 softball tournament.

"Groveport was selected to host the tournament due to the number of fields we have in such a confined space," said Peyton.

Peyton added the tournament is a plus for Groveport.

"This tournament is a great way to bring people to the village of Groveport to introduce them to the great amenities that the village has to offer," said Peyton.

Fans of high caliber softball will be able to watch the tournament for free as there is no admission fee for spectators. There is an entry fee for the teams, but most parks and recreation departments either pay half of the admission or pay the full amount to have their teams represent them, noted Peyton.

Groveport Park is located at 7370 Groveport Road.
