Bank collects school supplies

Darlene West (left), new accounts representative, and Misty Bradley (right), operations manager, both representing Merchants Bank in London, display the school supplies the bank collected for H.E.L.P. House’s annual back-to-school outreach project. The bank also donated several bags of personal hygiene items to the community outreach center. According to Bradley, Merchants Bank also plans to collect food and toys for H.E.L.P. House’s Thanksgiving and Christmas projects.

Area churches and organizations have planned the following back-to-school events. All offer school supplies plus one invites children to a party.

First Baptist Church, 686 West Jefferson Kiousville Road, will host a back-to-school bash from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 20. Children are invited to pick up a brown and gold lunch bag filled with school supplies (while they last). Hot dogs will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. Carnival games, cake walks, a visit from a park naturalist, and Clippers ticket giveaways will happen from 7 to 8 p.m.

West Jefferson United Methodist Church, 36 S. Center St., will host a clothing give-a-way for families in need. If you are or know of a family in need of gently used clothing for ages 3-18, drop by the church to choose from the items the community has donated: August 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. or Aug. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon. To donate gently used clothing or new school supply items, call 614-879-8130.

H.E.L.P. House still needs new or gently-used clothes and school supplies for their upcoming back-to-school outreach project.  Especially needed is clothing for children in grades PreK-6, as well as scissors, two-pocket folders, plastic supply boxes, and vinyl zippered pouches. At this time, the organization has enough crayons and glue sticks. Call 740-852-1980.
